Hi all -
i'm new to this list, and lapsed as an hwg-lister - and please excuse any
wrong terminology.
I hope i'm in the correct place; so please redirect me if i ought to be
elsewhere.
(I'd post to "techniques" but i know cross-posting is a no-no )
I have a problem with giving my Lynx/text-only users the same information as
my windows-based users.
If someone (using a windows-based browser) would be look at
http://mysite.freeserve.com/PortsdownGeo/PH_11_Chalk.htm
and select (or scroll down to)
"Chalk - a type of limestone"
you'll see the word "sedimentary" in a differ font colour/style.
If you mouse-hover over it, you get a short definition as a tool-tip.
If you click, you get taken off to the glossary for a full definition.
(However, the glossary-link only applies to some of the terms, but not those
with no fuller description, e.g. "Ma" gives a tool-tip of "Millions Years"
but no glossary def).
The code i use is:
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
-------------------
<a href="PH_51_Glossary.htm#sedy" class="GlossTerm"
title="Rocks formed from the erosion and re-solidification of pre-existing
rocks">
sedimentary
</a>
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
-------------------
However; in the Lynx browser, i don;t see how to get a tool-tip
short-definition, though it does appear as a "link".
I have had a spacer-gif with my "title" text duplicated as "alt" text
suggested -
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
----------------------------------
<a href="PH_51_Glossary.htm#sedy" class="GlossTerm" title="Rocks formed from
the erosion and re-solidification of pre-existing rocks">sedimentary
<img src="spacer.gif" width="0" height="0" alt="Rocks formed from the
erosion and re-solidification of pre-existing rocks" />
</a>
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
----------------------------------
but the problem with that is that i don;t want the lynx user to have to see
the short-def every time; (and i hate spacer-gifs!).
My aim is to allow anyone knowing the terms to be able to read the text
without interruption, but to provide a quick-ref for a newer user who is
unfamiliar with the terminology.
I have it fixed for the windows-user; but not for Lynx.
Can anyone help, or ought i post to techniques?
And any comments at all, appreciated -
thanks -
hilma
