Very basic question

Very basic question: it's not basic. I can only answer stuff like this
because I've got a tagref book infront of me.

when using div and span - remember that both are the same, apart from div
forces a line break before and after each in the tag pair. Therefore div is
more commonly used now (by some designers) instead of paragraph, because -
well i don't know why.
I always use span with a <br> before and after it as it helps me keep track
of the spaces in different headings on my site.

This is probably a load of rubbish but hey, might as well post as I havn't
for a while.
