text-based counters - with a twist?

I would like a text-based counter. I have tried my own scripts but they all
require the use of the exec cgi SSI call, which my host doesn't allow.
Therefore, I would like to know if anyone knows of a text based counter
system, without the need for adverts - that i can link to or #include?
