No "make" file when installing pearl

I think this may be off topic but I don't have anywhere else to turn.
I am installing a newer version of perl on Linux from a disc supplied with
SAMs teach yourself perl (the system is dual boot with Windows95 and Corel
Linux) .The message I get when compiling the source code is something like
"unable to locate "make" I need it to live". I have tried to locate it in
the directories without success, I have read the manual documentation in the
old version of perl I have installed, and I have tried the pearl.com site
but there are over 2000 unreplied messages on there and I am desperate for
quick a solution.
I am at a total loss on this one, if anyone can provide any help I would be
very grateful.
