It would seem to be fairly simple:
Some very popular dingbats have a text equivalent
but using the numerical protocol, you can call up any character supported by
your font.

I remember reading somewhere that the numerical codes are more widely
supported. I'm sure someone out there will correct me if I'm wrong. 8^)
