Karen (et al) -

I saw your posting on the Basics digest, number 573.

I'd agree about the use of tables - while it's not really recommended by the
W3C, there's no other way, IMHO, of ensuring that the majority of one's site
is laid out in the manner that one wishes visitors to see.

However, one of the references you posted was for the Dallas News
(http://www.dallasnews.com/).

Now, I'm obviously missing something, but having poured over the source of
that URL for an hour or so, I still can't figure out how they got the
vertical divider lines.

I'm currently developing a hobby site e-zine format, and, while I've got the
CSS fine (and, for a change, validated!), the HTML (and, for that matter,
the upgrade from HTML 3.2 to HTML 4 for the entire site!) is causing me a
problem: How do I make those rather nifty vertical divider lines, to
separate the columns?

The proof site (still under construction, and therefore not linked from my
main hobby site) is at
http://web.ukonline.co.uk/roger.stenning/blackeagle_bulletin/index.html. And
before anyone asks, I KNOW that it's not yet cross-browser compatible
<grin>, and that it's designed with 800x600 in mind <even bigger grin>!

Any suggestions on this vertical ruler snag would be welcome!

Best regards,

Roger Stenning
