HTML Technicalities

What I would like to know, is about those bits of hTML you never learn. The
document type definitions and versions of hTML. I've been writing pages for
years and now i think i should learn.

Transitional and all the others:
what are the others and what are they all about

and all the possible dtd tags such as frameset as I would like to be able to
choose which ones are relevant to my sites.

and iso tags?
the ones with the encoding. what are all the permeatations and which do i
use and when?
