Recent Flood of Attacks on Servers

Is everyone else out there experiencing the same flood of attacks on their
servers?  The last three days my raw server logs have had a tremendous
number of attacks.  Happily, none are getting through . . . but I am sure
they are slowing the server response down.  If this is much is happening on
my web site, I can't imagine what is happening to the entire server my Host
has my site on.  This is especially troubling . . . is there anything we can
do?  I did IP lookups on several of the attacking sites, but hesitate to
e-mail anyone.  A co-worker said that could spur someone to do/attempt even
worse things!
