First, I check my market. Of that market niche, who is coming to my site and
what are they using to view me? My particular market group still has almost
30% using Netscape3 (UGH!) on a mac. Almost 38% are viewing me though PC-AOL
(various versions). The rest is totally splintered with Netscape 4.x, IE4
and IE5 on PCs with various connection rates/speeds. The site would be a lot
fancier-schmancier if I didn't have to deal with the restrictions of our
visitors!
PCs handle colors differently than macs... colors are visually "darker" (for
lack of a better term)on PCs, while macs render colors using higher
luminosity values, making them visually lighter. Sometimes with catastrophic
results! I have changed colors occasionally because of that.
PCs color monitors display fonts and images (everything, actually) at 120%
of their actual size, while macs generally display things at 85-95% of
actual size. Assuming screen resolution is the same for both, these
percentages generally hold true.
I don't want to alienate my incoming-producing, salary-paying market. I have
to make compromises on that, sometimes. We all do. I design for my existing
market first.
Evolve. Share. Thanks to those who shared their styles.
