Ken, Cindy and others ...
I would like to point out that in our attempts to be all things
to all people, we often times get carried away. Not only do we
have to decide for ourselves, just how much longer we are going
to support old obsolete browsers, but we need to secure the
"informed" opinions and wishes of OUR clients. The ones who are
actually paying for the sites we create.
While it is true that there are still some old machines out
there, fewer and fewer are remaining in the hands of real, viable
customers. The computers on hand varies in this office but I
managed a Pent II with 64 megs of RAM, 3 gigs of hard drive and a
19 inch monitor to view it with, as my personal machine, and I
did it primarily with Social Security. And--considering the
overly generous proportions of my waistline, it's obvious I
didn't have to give up eating to do it.
I have a grandson that has pieced together an old 486 and he is
running Windows 95 and IE-4 and all on just 8 megs.
Most of us, (who were actually doing any heavy graphics work) had
that much, usually a lot more RAM half a decade ago whether we
used PC or Mac.
The point is there will ALWAYS be a few that lag behind but as
one of my clients puts it ...
"If they can't or won't afford a bare minimum computer, they sure
as hell can't afford one of my 20 thousand dollar used cars."
Please understand--I'm not suggesting that we get carried away
and use every single bell or whistle that comes along. I'm just
saying it is equally silly to wait another ten years for such a
tiny group to hold everything up.
It may sound cruel, but if we stop coddling them they will
upgrade darn quick.
And lastly--I'm really not as mean spirited as I sound, honest !!
Best wishes
Ted Temer
