As the general agreement seems to indicate, HTML is the markup language
of the Web. Version 5 will incorporate some of XML's better features,
but is still HTML.
XML will be an EXCELLENT way of storing data that can be translated to
HTML on the fly to answer a request from a browser. Or to another
markup language to answer a request from a word processer, or a cell
phone, or a space shuttle. Its value is that a master document can
server many different media types, allowing for centralized maintenance
for the document.
Allaire has a free product called WDDX (http://www.wddx.org/) that takes
data from other programming languages, and serializes it into XML
well-formed "packets" that allow it to be transmitted from a Perl
application to a JavAScript or C or Java application for use. This is
an illustration of what can be accomplished.
