After several years of using Perl, I began using PHP a few weeks ago. I was
using it live on my projects within a week of deciding to tackle it. An
excellent Open Source alternative for someone new to server-side scripting.

The Cap'n's right. I started learning php a few months ago -- wow!
And, so far (I'm still a newbie), it's the easiest programming language to
learn. You'll need a server with PHP and then sky's the limit on what you
can do. PHP is server side, so the user has better luck with it than with
javascript.
