in an example in the WAI-accessibility coretechniques.

You are right. I had to tell that alt attribute should be a text alternative to
the validationimage. A graphic
that says "Valid CSS" should have an alt attribute of "Valid CSS" and that the
spacerimage I have between the
validationicons has this <img src="/images/spacer.gif" width="1" height="1" alt
=" || " />
 So the  iconlinks are in the lynxscreen separated by ||.
