As Bill himself explained it at a seminar I attended.

The so called DOS language has been around for many years. So--if you came
up with a new operating system that was going to be used by people familiar
with DOS, just what language and or terminology would YOU use??

We must also remember that several of the "original" DOS terms came from
code used to command the machine, the hard drives and such.

It is the same sort of thing as if one of us bought a small island and
started a new country. If they all came from my crazy state of California,
our "language" might still sound like our rather warped form of English.

Windows 95-98 is a new operating system that still uses many DOS terms and
language for the convenience of it's customers. And yes--Bill included
emulators of many old DOS stand byes so those who liked them could still use
them. But they're not your grandpa's Oldsmobile anymore. (I heard that on TV
somewhere)

However Windows NT is admitted by most to have come from another planet
somewhere that developed a parallel DOS. Still, it seems to work quite
nicely for most of us and the few webs I have running on NT servers never
cause any grief.

But--Is a new Taurus wagon still a Model T simply because it has four wheels
and the name "Ford" on it??

Best wishes
