Soggy Easter Greetings, Julie!

How does one prevent a visitor from accessing index pages on
a server?
</snip>

Your webmaster can assign read, write, and access/execute
privileges for folders and files on your site. But I may
have misunderstood you. You don't want people to read one of
your web pages, OR you don't want them to be able to read
the source file which is used to render the page in the
browser?

OR
You don't want them to be able to backtrack into a listing
of the files in your directories? It is possible to allow
access to files without allowing reading privileges to the
directory listing itself.

If YOU are the webmaster of your site, ask your ISP what
controls are available to you as the
administrator/webmaster. Read the available documentation
and go to town <g>.

<snip>
how does a main, or homepage's, URL *not* appear as
*index.html*?
Is *index.html* simply another html document entirely?
</snip>

It is common for ISP's to require you to name your default
home page "index.htm" or "default.html" or similar. This is
the file they will display automatically if no filename is
in the URL (i.e. - www.madeupname.com vs.
www.madeupname.com/support.htm) Speak to your ISP to see
what other options they may have for you.

cheers!
