Susan:

I just hate these people who--instead of replying to my question--send me
off to some link to read something. But here I go, doing the same thing.

This link I am about to suggest is Lesson 2 of one of the best, easy to
understand, down to earth, JavaScript tutorials I have ever seen. It comes
from the JavaScript Learning Center at:

http://www.javascriptmall.com/learn/lesson2.htm

This lesson gives an overview of just what JavaScript is--what it can do for
your pages and briefly explains the difference between JavaScript and Java,
(a much more powerful programming language).

There are samples to demonstrate JavaScript in action here as well. A half
hour spent on this page should give you answers to most of your questions.
And with far more detail than any brief e-mail could.

Best wishes
