Oh, good grief, you mean to try and assert that this small-time measure will
protect your images? I'm sorry to burst your bubble, but, *wrong*.

Watermarks and copyright text embossed or otherwise part of an image are
useless because they can be edited out unless they have been imprinted in a
manner that renderes the image useless if edited out. In that case, the
image is a waste as an exhibit because who cares to view your watermark?

If you think there is security from theft existing on the Net today you're
in for a grave disappointment and setting yourself up to become a
cyber-victim the first time you try and *protect* an image and it is ripped
out from under you.

We have in-house testing which includes staff creating images, or, using
images supplied by clients, and placing watermarks on them. Then, different
staff go about trying to remove the watermarks and restore the image so some
useable format.

As a result of our testing we have yet to find a watermark that couldn't be
removed. Many can be removed and the image reused in another manner. Some
rendered the image visually impaired and (in our opinion) useless. But, in
those cases, the image was visually inpaired from the beginning because the
watermark distorted the image.

After all, get real, who is going to want to use an image on their website
(or view it as art) when it has a watermark running through the center? Just
think what "Mona Lisa" would look like with a watermark running across her
chest. I doubt it would hold its value.

We make it clear to our clients of the risks of image theft and copyright
infringment and how placing anything into the public domain arries inherent
risks. There are criminals and idle hackers out there just waiting for fresh
material to surface that challenges them. If you want to find out just place
something onto the Net and tell everyone it can't be cracked.
