You've explained it well enough :-)  It's done with javascript.  There's a
couple of free scripts here that you can experiment with
http://javascript.internet.com/navigation/menu.html - has the button to push
to go to the link
http://javascript.internet.com/navigation/menu-automatic.html - I like this
one because you don't need to click a button, just select the link.
