G'day

None of the main DTDs do not allow backgrounds in Table Cells.  Most
browsers seem to be able to handle it.  However, if you want to have the
document validate, you can apply the backgrounds using CSS.  Example:

<.td style="background-image: url('path/to/background-image.gif')">

Again, most major browsers appear to support it (at least, NN4.77, IE5,
Opera 4/5 on Windows do)
