I've been using web position gold for the past couple of years and am very
 happy with it.

It has several modules. The most basic (the reporter) simply searches your
keywords of interest on the 16-or-so top search engines and reports your
pages' rankings for all keywords of interest in all the specified search
 engines.

Another module (the critic) uses the knowledge that the company's
researchers have compiled about the structure of high-ranking pages with
the
structure of your pages. This is done keyword by keyword, search engine by
search engine. The researchers keep updating their knowledge bases based
on
their experiences with the search engines.

There are also modules which submit your pages to the search engines and
generate pages optimized for the search engine you select.

This program is not a magic bullet. It is a serious analysis tool which
provides information to help you improve your rankings. There is no magic,
and for keywords that are very competitive you may still not achieve the
rankings you want. But this tool gives you the advantage of WebPosition's
research and a tool which takes some of the worst tedium out of the job.

I think it is well worth the cost, which I believe is less than $200.

 Kim

As for search engine positioning being a waste of time...... it is a means
of advertising which can be effective and costs only your time. In my
book,
it's worth some effort to make it effective.
