Susan, Ken, D Kennedy and others interested:
(To all other, my apologies. I do believe this is of interest as it does
affect web design.)

I have just made a few calls during our local lunch hour about this "new"
(?) revelation at being able to turn off our slick, sexy style sheets that
we have went to such trouble to create ... (Tongue firmly in cheek)

The results of the rather tiny and broken straw poll were thus:

Apparently as Susan surmised, the latest versions of browsers have dropped
the feature as style sheets have become the "norm". Two others agreed that
the feature is there in IE-4 but not in IE-5.

Although a small percentage of surfers can do this, (turn off Styles), very
few actually would. They would simply be messing with the page clarity.

As with everything that affects text size, the subject is still important to
the visually impaired. To be Bobby compliant, one should not specify the
font size. However, color, font family and bolding should be OK.

Although it would seem to be very important to web authors, in reality,
there is little we can do about it. Just as some turn off images and Java,
some may turn off Styles.

As we usually check our sites with the Style Sheet disabled to see how our
page looks in older browsers, there will be little difference between
turning off styles and viewing with a browser that does not support styles
in the first place.

As to the font size difference between Mac and PC. The tech guys say this is
because the resolution is a little different on Macs and PCs. Then of
course, there are large monitors and there are small monitors used on both
operating systems. Again it is viewer's choice but we must remember that
tiny monitors on either Mac or PC generally have lower resolutions and the
viewers will have to scroll to view sites that are too wide.

Bottom line??
To paraphrase the well known adage:
Web Design is not for sissies !!

Best wishes
