Yes, all Pat and Jim write is true. I'm not claiming this is a 100%
solution. Sure, anyone can look up the JavaScript in their cache. A spammer
isn't going to bother. And I'm still changing over to the new way of doing
my emails, so some of the older pages still show the address. Not a big
deal.
My goal isn't anonymity, it's reduction of spam. To some degree, I want to
be known.
You're also right that there's nothing I can do about my addresses on Usenet
and other places on the Web before now. I'm still not sure how I want to
deal with new sources (like this email!). I don't think I want a junk Yahoo
account. It's too much trouble.
Still, I most of my junk emails are coming from my sites. I know that
because I usually had a distinct address on my pages. Obscuring the address
is bound to do some good, and that's good enough for me.
When I first researched ways of hiding email addresses years ago, I didn't
do anything because of the reasoning of the naysayers, who were obviously
very bright people--just like Jim and Pat. Things change. Now the spam has
gotten so bad, that I'm willing to do something simple that will keep most
of the new sources of spam from stealing my address from my sites.
I'm tempted by the possibility of sending a system message back to spammers
that makes my address look like a dead one. I need to look into that more.
I figure that if you wait for perfection, like I did at first, you'll just
get more spam. Enjoy!
