I knew I'd seen a tip on this before. I just delved into the archives at HWG
and eventually found it. Go to this message:

I do not know how you can set up a customised button in your browser (they
all vary and it might need tweaking in the registry) but you can set up a
bookmark with the following URL, as per Ryan's message above:
javascript:location.href='http://validator.w3.org/check?url='+self.location.
href+'&ss'
(If the line above has wrapped, make sure you copy both bits)
You can set this up as a bookmark/favorite or as a link in the "Link Bar" at
the top of your screen (IE).
