new domain names

I was trying to find out more about the new domain names and I was wondering
what the significance of the .info was supposed to be.  Does anyone really
take these dot names seriously any more?  Everyone is a ".com" even if they
aren't a commercial venture.  Lots of ".nets" are not in the business and
".org" has been used by individuals who can't get the ".com" they are
seeking.  What's up with this stuff?  Should I worry about it?

I want to get a domain and have been agonizing over this minutiae as if it
was important, but some folks tell me I shouldn't.  What's the group think?
