Bruce,

I have to respectfully disagree with you on this point although I understand
your viewpoint.  While technically you are correct, the facts are that the
vast majority of user on the internet use Internet Explorer.  As of Nov
2004, 73.5% of all internet users used either IE 6 or IE5.  (ref:
http://www.w3schools.com/browsers/browsers_stats.asp).

While Mozilla has traditionally been much more standards compliant, the
viewers that visit my client's web sites couldn't care less.  All they know
is that it has to work and it either does or it doesn't.  Try explaining to
a customer that it's not YOUR fault, but it's the fault of the browser.  You
don't get very far when you do this (been there, done that).

So, while I agree with the technical aspect of what you're saying, I have to
agree with Sophia when applying it to the real world.  In this case, it only
makes sense to get it to work in the most commonly used browser first WITH
THESE IDEAS IN MIND:

1 - Try to implement a solution that is standards compliant regardless of
what you do.
2 - If you implement something that is browser specific, try to do so in a
way that allows it to degrade gracefully.
3 - Keep in mind that you can usually achieve what you want and do so in a
way that meets the standards.
