use of special character

I'm using a "special character", &#155;   (alt 155) on one of our websites.
I have found that according to the W3C specs that it apparently isn't
supported by charset=iso-8859-1.  Is there an alternate Charset that I can
use that will still vailidate that contains this character?  If so, how do I
find this out (legit web references)?

Forgive me if I am asking a "dumb" question.  I have recently gotten into
beginning to validate our websites and am still learning about correctly
validated pages and correctly integrating CSS into html.

I particularly like this character because it is much smaller and better
shaped than a ">".  However, if I can't find a way to validate it with an
acceptable charset, I will probably find an alternate solution.

Any ideas?
