A good starting place for learning about cookies is
the series of articles by Charity Kahn at CNet, at
http://www.builder.com/Programming/Kahn/111997/

There are a couple pre-written cookie javascripts
for you to use called SetCookie and GetCookie,
plus explanations and practical examples,
and that's how I got started with them.
