Can anyone explain this <IMG src="...?

I inherited an html page which has the following line:
       <IMG src="index_files/fegli_hd.gif">

This displays just fine, but there is no "index_files" directory anywhere on
the site.  The correct path ought to be:
      <IMG SRC="../../images/fegli_hd.gif">.

Can anyone explain why the first code works?  Please reply directly as well
as to the list.
