Since I've gotten several requests...I wish I'd saved the long
response I typed to a list member yesterday... :)
The quick version:
1: In the graphics program of your choice, create a new picture, 30
px by 30 px.
2: Select one of the Netscape-safe colors you wish to use. For this
example, I'll pick light green (#ccffcc).
3: Paint the entire field light green.
4: Magnify to a high value. I usually go either 1200% or 1600%.
5: Select the pencil tool (or any other tool that will allow you to
paint one pixel at a time) and another similar color. I'll choose
white (#ffffff).
6: Create a checkerboard pattern using the pencil tool and make sure
you cover the entire area. If you have a graphics program that uses
layers (Photoshop and Paint Shop Pro both do this), this is where you
can create several of these checkerboard "grids" in separate layers
to test color combinations.
7: Save the image as a .gif and load it to your server. You can then
use it as a lovely light, light green background (if you used the
colors above).
If you follow these directions exactly, you will get the desired
effect. The number of combinations are almost endless, so 216 colors
can stretch to quite a few using this technique.
Next week, Sabrina develops CTS. Stay tuned! :)
