There is a huge number of programming languages that can be used under Li=
nux
(ie basically any language that can be used under UNIX). For web-based
applications, PERL and JAVA are probably the most common choices, while
scripting languages include CGI and PHP. For Linux-based applications, C/=
C++,
Python, PERL, JAVA, ELF, Linux Shell, even FORTRAN, COBOL and Pascal can =
be
used! Most Linux distributions come bundled with the GNU C compiler (gcc)=
 and
C++ compiler (egcs on Red Hat 6.1 and g++ on other versions). I don't kno=
w
about compilers for other languages, as I've only coded using C++ and poo=
rly
at that. C++ is not for the faint hearted; very steep learning curve
particularly for the non-programmer. Many of the other languages I believ=
e are
of similar complexity.
