  You can do it that way .. although if you have the option to resample you 
may find that makes a better image. Also you can save them at a higher 
compression level .. since the image isn't as critical as the look of a 
larger image. Remember the idea of using a thumbnail is all about reducing 
load times by using the most effiecient files you can make.
  Thumbs Plus and JPG Imager do this for you as batch files if you have a 
lot to do and both have free trials ..

I find the renaming and preview pages it creates very handy ...
