Registering Domain Name

I would like to register and purchase my first domain name.  Please provide 
me with input in terms of who you used and why.  I'm not good at 
interpreting legal contracts nor do I have the resources.  I would like to 
buy a name and own the complete rights to the url address.  I would prefer 
that the company I register it with not own part or all of the name.

Any input would be appreciated since this is new to me.
