One possible solution here is to rewrite your script so that the very first 
thing it does is send the thankyou page to the visitor, and then does the 
processing. No reason to make the visitor sit and tap his fingers while the 
server plays with databases and sends email.

Another solution, but not always a readily feasible one, is to switch 
hosting companies. Don't be afraid to ask the prospective host about server 
capabilites and load. If your provider is hosting more than a few 
process-intensive web sites, this will put a heavy load on the server and 
slow things down for everyone.
