Erin-
I beg to differ with anyone that says that you can't get a good digital
camera for under $500. I highly recommend the Olympus D360L. It was about
$300 and is definitely better than our $600 Mavica. (If you like the
Mavica's floppy disk convenience, you can buy the floppy disk adapter and
still come out ahead.)
The memory is not that expensive either. For a 16mb card it was about $50 at
Sears. Between that and the 8mb card that came with it we can take about 100
photos in HQ mode (high quality is the middle res option) before clearing
the cards. And the best part is that it doesn't eat batteries nearly as fast
as some of our other cameras! I'm more than willing to send you images if
you'd like to check out the quality. Or, check out the site:

Of course, if you want to spend more, that's up to you. Saying that you want
it for something more than email doesn't give enough info to know whether
you want it for prints or online or both. Assuming you wanted it for both, I
asked around. My single colleague with the large disposable income
recommends the Nikon CoolPix 990 for about $990 if you can afford to pay
extra or the CoolPix 800 for about $550 and my other colleague recommends
the Kodak DC240 for about $500.
I still say that if you want a good multi purpose camera at a reasonable
cost, the Olympus D360L is the way to go. : )
