I have seen two good solutions to this, and I can only do one of them.
In order to let the user view or save (without viewing) the PDF, I
offer two links: one to the PDF, and one to the Zip file. The downsides
to this are having to upload two copies of the PDF (normal and zipped)
and including two links instead of one. The upside is ease of use and
not requiring the user to change the Applications settings in their
browser (ugh!) in order to not automatically view the PDF.
One person said they always get this dialog; I suspect their browser
might not be set to use the Acrobat plug-in for PDFs.
FTP would be ideal, and I'm told it would transfer the files faster,
but for the unfortunate fact that our ISP does not offer FTP service
with our account! I am sure this is a common problem. Anyway, this
would still be a second link, though only one PDF file would be needed.
Could there be a JavaScript solution, as well? Can JS force the browser
to save the file instead of showing it?
Oh, and by the way-- I don't think the Save icon in Acrobat for Mac
works. I have to go to File:Save As to save the PDF.
