When you register a domain, it belongs to the person you list as
registrant. That does not have to be you simply because you paid for it.
By naming the client as registrant, admin. contact, and billing contact,
there is no question of the Webmaster relinquishing the domain. The
domain must be paid for at least a year in advance so there is also no
question of not paying the bill. When the domain is up for renewal, the
registrant and billing contact (the client) will be notified so again
you are not involved.
