Hello again..

I thought I would post back my findings so far.  I've compiled information
about web site development from 5 sources, and then I pulled out the common
approaches and unique ideas.

Sorry if this is off topic - I started out on the business list but I was
the only one home.

I found that the process of creating a web site could be organized around 5
stages; planning(strategy), design, production, implementation, and
maintenance.

I've only completed the planning stage analysis so far, but here is the best
practice.


Best practice #1 is the creation of a comprehensive Web Site Project Plan
that includes; mission statement, site objectives, measures of success,
desired functionality, description of look and feel, content list, technical
requirements, critical dates, and web site budget.

+The mission statement will be written by the senior executive.
+Marketing, HR, and corporate objectives will be written after customer
profiles, audience requirements, and competitor sites have been studied.
They will then be pulled together into the web site objectives.
+Where possible objectives will have a way to determine success;eg. cost
savings or revenue creation
+Functionality descriptions will support the meeting of objectives
+Look and feel will describe the tone
+Content List will include all content - both existing and works that need
to be created
+Technical requirements - taken from the customer profiles or audience
analysis eg..connections speed,
+Critical dates - expected timeline for each stage and launch
+Web Site budget - current budget and responsibilities
+If possible (depending on the project size) a project web site will be
created on the company intranet to communicate between groups

If the web site is to be outsourced - the project plan is used as an RFP.

Whew... that's our planning stage in a nutshell.
