I think you just type the commands into any text editor and save as a bat
file type.. then run from the DOS command prompt.

Have you considered Visual Basic for Applications instead?  They might enjoy
creating visual interfaces and putting code behind buttons.

This is not an HTML question but in a way it is . I want to teach our
younger sons QBASIC, but I need to know if there is a program that I can
download that will allow me to do this.
