I echo Ted's opinion.

I would like to add that when I have the opportunity to talk with the folks
that are actually going to write the content before it has been done, I
always tell them to think up and list ~all~ the key words and search terms
_ they _ feel a potential customer might reasonably think of to use to find
them. And then to incorporate those words and terms as often as possible
without sounding *really* stupid.

I get a copy of that list and include it in the META information and ALT
information tags as appropriate.

This is done on the premise that if you do your homework before the spider
arrives regardless of what method it uses to incorporate you into it's
index you stand a very reasonable chance of being listed very well.

Historically, it works pretty well.

I have pages that have been offline for two years that are still hitting in
the top five, on three or four different search services!
