Well, actually, dpi information IS retained. GIF images change to
72dpi automatically as they are designed for screen use in the first
place. JPEG images, on the other hand, are designed for general
application wherever compression is needed. They do retain whatever
dpi is set for them when they are designed. When designing for the
screen, it is should be remembered to resample the file to 72dpi when
creating the final files. You might want to retain higher resolution
versions in case you need them later.
