getting input with Javascript

Hi all,
	I know that there's a way to make a sort of input box appear on a 
webpage using Javascript (akin to an InputBox() in VB or a 
JOptionPane() in Java) but I don't know the code for it.  If someone could 
enlighten me, I'd be ever so grateful =).
