I know that Red Hat Linux (6.1) offers to install Apache as part of the 
installation process (in fact, I have it and can't get rid of it =)  ), but as for 
your question, yes.  You can have everything on the same machine.  In 
fact, you could even use Windows if you wanted, just get a web server 
such as vqServer (http://www.vqsoft.com) and keep it running in the 
background.  In fact, vqServer is much more userfriendly than Apache, 
since you can configure it through a web-based interface, rather than 
Apache's nasty config files.  The best thing is that vqServer will also run 
under Linux, since it's written entirely in Java.

One final thing,  once you get your web server running (whether it is 
Apache or anything else), to test stuff, put them in to your server's public 
directory (public/ or htdocs/ or something similar) and use the URL: 
http://127.0.0.1/<mydir>/ where <mydir> is the name of a dir that you've 
put in the public dir.  Look up the server's manual/help files for 
information on CGI.
