Thanks to everybody who helped me out with this problem.  For anybody 
who's interested, the problem turned out to be a software conflict with Dr 
Solomon's Anti-Virus Toolkit.  Disabling this sorted the problem.  Blimey, 
the wacky world of Windows, eh? :o)
