I *think* that there's another roundabout way of doing this as well that I'm 
sure has been mentioned on this list before that involves using 
GhostScript.  
First you should download and install GhostScript and GhostView for 
your platform (I think that there are version for Linux, Windows and Mac). 
 I don't know a URL, but it shouldn't be hard to find one on the web.

Next, if you install a Postscript printer on your system (eg an Apple 
LaserWriter) and set it to print to file.  If you then print your document 
(written in eg MS Word) to this printer, you will be asked for a directory 
to print the file to.  Select a directory and save the file.  Rename the .prn 
file with a .ps extension and open it in GhostView.  Now select the print 
option and there should be "pdfwrite" under the 'devices' list box.  Select 
the 'print to file' check box and give it a name with a .pdf extension.  
Voila, one ready-made PDF file.  Hey, I said that it was roundabout :o).

I don't know how much control that you get with this, as with other 
methods, I think that some font substitution may occur etc, but it's 
worked for me the few times that I've needed to do something like that.
