Automatically checking checboxes with JS

Hi folks,
I want to be able check a whole load of checkboxes (all with the same name) by pressing a button 
in JS.  I know that such a thing is possible (since Hotmail does this if you click the 'from' checkbox 
above the list of addresses) but I've got no idea how you would go about starting.  Any ideas?
