Tim Rivera advised me that I was specifying the DTD, whereas I should 
have let the validator "sniff" it out, and that was causing the 
results that I was "panicking" over.

Now about presentation.  I know your pages can validate, both the 
HTML coding and CSS coding and still have your pages being presented 
in the browsers with less than optimum results.

This page (http://www.maddoc.net/mailing_lists.html) validates both 
with HTML 4.01 transitional and CSS (I validated the css in the 
header tags and the style sheet). The only browser that it "appears" 
correctly in is with Mozilla 1.1 (of the 4 browsers I have on my 
computer).

Opera 5.01 -- the layout is fine, but it looks as though I need to 
specify width of the tables in the navigation bar at the top of the 
page.

Netscape 4.7 -- the navigation bar is not centered, but over on the 
left hand side of the page. The button for the CSS validation appears 
between the information in the h2 tag and the first item on the list 
of links. (as if it was part of the tabling, but outside a cell or 
row tag). The button for the HTML 4.01 button is in its proper place. 
(the table is thrown over to the right more than it should, but this 
could be caused by some coding I added later, dunno)

IE 5.5 (and am told in version 6) the table is thrown way over to the 
right and not centered.

I have looked at the coding on this page so much that I now can't see 
the forest for the trees, would appreciate any help anyone could give 
me.
