Newer browsers can (more or less) read PNGs.  Check out 
http://www.libpng.org/pub/png/pngapbr.html for browser support and 
http://www.alistapart.com/stories/pngopacity/ for suggestions on working around broken browsers.

I'm trying to move my sites away from gifs to pngs, so all new images that I would have created as 
gifs (ie pretty much everything except photos) I now try and create as pngs.
