Problems with IE and tables

Hi all,
Could someone go along to 
http://frodo/discussions/discuss.php?subsection=essays and tell me 
why the main body of the pages is so huge?  This only seems to happen 
with IE5 (I think).  It certainly does *not* happen with NS4.72 or Opera 
5.01.  The W3C validator seems to be down at the moment, so I can't 
validate it.  This problem also occurs in various other sections of the site 
(use the navbar on the LHS to explore) Please help!
Please CC me since I'm on the digest.
