Something else to bear in mind is locality.  I'm from the UK and I 
*personally* prefer any company that I might buy from to have a co.uk 
domain name because .com has the impression of being American.  The 
same applies to .org.uk and .net.uk etc.  If the site that I'm visiting is 
purely informational in nature, then I don't worry, but I do like local (ie UK 
based) sites for news and commerce.  

To go back to the question, I personally do prefer it when the domain 
suffix represents the nature of the company, but I see the argument for 
the other side.  And being a computing science student, I'm hardly the 
"average"  net user :o).
