Hi all, some more newbie questions (I did search the HWG archives and the 
web, but am no further advanced)

What I want to do is try out some activeX components on a web page, and 
I don't have the first idea of how to go about it.  I think it has 
something to do with using an OBJECT tag and a GUID gets in there somehow
but I don't know how ... if anyone can point me to a site with some 
'active X components on a web page for dummies' type instructions, some 
worked examples .. I would be very grateful.

a few somewhat related questions 

1) is it still true that Netscape does not support ActiveX and the user 
must download a plugin ?

2) there must be some 'industry standard' javascript out there that 
detects what browser is running, but what if the user has js disabled ?
(which I gather can be done and also disables css) .. what do I do then ? 
is vbs always available in all browsers (I assume it IS available in at 
least some browsers like IE)

3) I came across some references to an "ActiveX control pad" .. is this 
obsolete?

4) I'd be happy to hear any opinions about whether it is or is not a good 
idea to use ActiveX, but at the moment all I really want to do is evaluate 
it technically - I want to get it to work, then maybe I can get a feel for 
if it is a good idea or not.  So, does anyone know of a good 'component 
market' .. I have come across www.componentsource.com and www.active-x.com 
but I guess there are others out there.


I'd like to thank the people on this list for the help they have given me 
in the couple of weeks I have been a member. I am happy to do the tech 
work and read stuff, but sometimes I just don't know the right questions 
to ask and I get overwhelmed and the guidance I have received has helped 
to give me the confidence to venture into uncharted (to me) waters.  So,
